Frequently Asked Questions
Learn How it Works!
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. It’s believed that this stimulation can balance the flow of energy, or Qi, in the body and promote healing. Modern research suggests that acupuncture can stimulate the nervous system and release pain-relieving chemicals in the body, providing pain relief and other therapeutic benefits. Before undergoing acupuncture, it’s first best to consult a specialist in the field like Dr. Carolyn Cook!
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture has been used to treat a wide range of conditions, including pain, stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, menstrual cramps, digestive problems, and insomnia, among others. Some studies also suggest that acupuncture can help with addiction, infertility, and certain skin conditions.
Is acupuncture safe and does it have any side effects?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner. Minor side effects, such as mild discomfort or bruising at the needle site, are relatively uncommon and usually resolve quickly. More serious adverse reactions are rare, but practitioners take steps to minimize risk by using sterile needles and following other standard precautions.
How many acupuncture sessions are needed to see results?
The number of acupuncture sessions needed to see results depends on several factors, including the condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and the individual’s response to treatment. Some people experience relief after a single session, while others may need several visits. An acupuncture practitioner can provide a more accurate estimate of the number of treatments needed after evaluating a patient’s individual needs.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
The coverage of acupuncture by insurance can vary widely depending on the individual policy and insurance company. Some insurance plans cover acupuncture as part of their medical benefits, while others may only provide coverage in specific cases, such as for pain management. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to determine if acupuncture is covered and to understand the specific terms and conditions of the coverage.
